Diploma in Advertising and Graphic Design

My favourite homework assignment/project in college/university so far was Packaging! I like the fact that a design was created from just a flat piece of paper and can be turned into an interesting shape masterpiece.

Choosing my course

It was rather an unusual experience. I first learned the existence of Graphic Designers before I was 10 years old; but I have no idea what it was though it stuck with me until this day of age. I began to pick up basic design skills when I was in Form 2 and I found myself with a growing interest in designing. When I completed my SPM, without hesitation, I knew what I wanted to do.

My course

Others may have a perception that art & design is all about making beautiful things; true though, but not entirely. Design involves problem solving, it has to be functional to benefit others. Graphic Design has a lot to with communication because it is a communication tool using typography, graphics and images, and more. Advertising & Graphic Design works relies a lot on how we perceive things around us and how we think. During the course, we weren’t only taught software skills or design skills but we were required to use creative and strategic thinking. It is important for Graphic Designers and Advertisers to always use fresh and exciting ideas in order to encode our message across. During our course, we were also given deadlines and opportunities to pitch a real business deal to ensure that we would gain the experience that we need to work closely in the real working environment.

The best bits about my course

I believe the best part is to constantly challenge your self to do something different. Many times we tend to be stuck and we try to get out of our comfort zones (or out of the “box”) and do something crazy or embarrassing! But at the end, it’s all fun and for the good of the project.

My challenges

When I first entered college, I didn’t have much design experience and was pretty lousy at drawing. However, I was surrounded by many talents in class. I felt really awful at first but I continued to work, to learn and committed countless hours into what I do. I refused to believe in what others say “you need talent to be in design”. I hold on to my passion and I tried to implement the advice given by those who are ahead of me. I tried to learn more through reading and initiated my own research. Although I understand that there are still many who are ahead of me, I can still look back and see how far I’ve come, and be encouraged to go further!

Extra-curricular activities

During breaks or between projects, I like to do photography and I enjoy designing my church whenever they need help.

Looking ahead

I truly hope to use design to make a difference to our world!

My advice

Choose your course according to your passion. It is what keeps you going and is the essence that drives you to excellence. As for the college/university, ask around, do your research and make sure you choose wisely.
