Types of scholarships

Scholarships for pre-university and undergraduate studies are awarded by a variety of organisations in the public and private sector. Use the table below as a guide.
Government scholarships
The Public Services Department (Jabatan Perkhidmatan Awam) offers pre-university and undergraduate scholarships yearly. For more information, visit www.jpa.gov.my/english/
Corporate scholarships
A host of corporations offer scholarships on a yearly basis. Multinationals such as Shell and PETRONAS, and utility providers Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Telekom Malaysia Berhad offer scholarships on a yearly basis. These corporations publicise their scholarship programmes as prominent advertisements in the newspapers. Visit their websites to get updates on their programmes.
University/College scholarships
Many private universities and colleges offer scholarships. They do so on their own or through joint initiatives such as the NST-MAPCU Scholarship (New Straits Times-Malaysian Association of Private Colleges and Universities) and the Star Education Fund-Scholarship Awards.
Such schemes are publicised widely as full-page advertisements in the New Straits Times or The Star, usually before the SPM results. Besides keeping a look-out in the newspapers for such advertisements, it is also worth visiting individual colleges to get information on their scholarship programmes.
Public universities provide scholarships too, which are sponsored by private organisations.
Charitable foundation scholarships

  • The Kuok Foundation advertises its undergraduate scholarship programme in the newspapers, normally in the early part of the year
  • Hong Leong Foundation Scholarship Programme.
  • Regional scholarships
  • The ASEAN Scholarships programme offered by the Ministry of Education, Singapore, leads to the award of the Singapore-Cambridge or GCE 'A' Level (or equivalent) certificates.
  • Outstanding students who perform well in the ‘A’ level (or equivalent) examinations may apply for the ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarships offered by the National University of Singapore or the Nanyang Technological University.

Others
There is also a variety of undergraduate scholarships available at individual universities in countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the US. Conduct searches through internet search sites such as www.google.com to get an informative list of such institutions.
Note!
Each organisation will have different criteria of eligibility, and scholarships will differ in scope – some may be full scholarships which cover tuition fees, food and accommodation, a personal allowance and yearly travel fare, while others may only cover tuition costs.
Conditions of a scholarship award also differ according to organisations. Some organisations may bond scholars – this means that upon graduation, scholars will be required to work for the company for a specific period. Other organisations may award scholarships with no conditions attached.
